The Shared Recipe

Farah and Pavel compare two pots of bean soup, one with rice and one with potatoes, at a community cooking evening.

The community centre asked residents to bring a family recipe to its first cooking evening. Farah chose a bean soup that her father used to make. She wrote the ingredients carefully and practised it twice at home.

At the centre, she met another cook, Pavel, who was making a very similar soup. His version included potatoes, while hers used rice. Both of them were surprised.

"My father said it was our family's special dish," Farah said.

"So did my grandmother," Pavel replied.

They began comparing instructions. Farah cooked the onions slowly. Pavel added them with the other vegetables. At first, each wanted to prove that their family's method was better.

Then they tasted the two soups. Both were good, but neither tasted quite like the other's. Farah remembered eating hers after long school days. Pavel remembered winter lunches at his grandmother's farm.

They put the recipes side by side on the noticeboard. Someone suggested choosing the best one for the centre's cookbook, but they decided to include both.

At the next meeting, a third person arrived with another version. Farah found a larger piece of paper for the noticeboard.
