For twenty-six springs, Hester's notebook had recorded the first appearance of the marsh warbler behind her house. The date had become a small local event: neighbours enquired, a newsletter mentioned it, and Hester pretended to find the attention excessive while ensuring that the notebook was close at hand.
That year, she heard the familiar call before dawn, three days earlier than ever before. She entered the date in ink. By lunchtime, the newsletter editor had asked for a photograph, and a neighbour had described the sighting online as another sign of a changing climate.
Hester had heard, not seen, the bird. More awkwardly, when she listened again to a brief recording, she could not exclude a different species whose call overlapped with the one she knew. She was experienced enough to recognise uncertainty and sufficiently invested in her experience to resent it.
She considered waiting for a clearer observation. If the warbler appeared the next day, the distinction might seem pedantic. But confirmation tomorrow would not establish what had happened today; her own training made this loophole unavailable.
She told the editor to postpone the item and amended the notebook to read "possible". The neighbour's post remained unchanged. Hester drafted a correction, worried that it sounded self-important, and sent it anyway.
The warbler appeared unmistakably a week later. Nobody asked for a photograph.
In autumn, a young observer visiting the marsh asked to see her records. He paused at the crossed-out date. Hester began explaining too much, then stopped. He was not questioning her competence. He wanted to know what had made her change her mind.
For the first time that year, the attention felt proportionate to the observation.
