The Song That Won’t Leave Your Head

Headphones beside equipment used to listen to and make music.

The music has stopped, but a line from the chorus is still playing in your head. You did not decide to recall it, and it may return whenever your attention wanders. Researchers call this involuntary musical imagery; in everyday language, it is often an earworm.

The experience usually involves a brief fragment rather than a complete song. Recent or repeated exposure can help trigger it. A word, a place or another association may also bring a tune back, even when no music is playing nearby.

Although people often complain about earworms, they are not always unpleasant. Studies using diaries and questionnaires reveal a more varied experience than the familiar image of an irritating chorus. Some people enjoy the unexpected background music.

There is still plenty to investigate. A review of the research noted that many participants came from a limited range of educated, Western populations. Findings from those groups cannot automatically describe everyone’s musical life. An ordinary moment on a bus can therefore lead to a broader question: whose everyday experiences have researchers actually measured?
